Are you in the market for a capable crossover SUV near Denver? Both the new MAZDA CX-5 and Kia Sportage are excellent choices, but if you had to choose one, you’d want to go with the Mazda for a more premium driving experience. Discover more about these models below as the team at Schomp Mazda walks you over the interior, safety, and performance of these SUVs.
Step inside the 2024 MAZDA CX-5, and you will see immediately that this crossover SUV stands out with a luxurious interior. Even on the base trim, this SUV has a leather interior, with features, such as leatherette-trimmed seats as well as a leather-wrapped gear selector and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. While you’re enjoying premium materials, you’ll also easily see all the information you need via a 10.25-inch full-color display. Plus, you can upgrade and use the available 10-speaker Bose® audio system to listen to your current playlist clearly as you commute around Aurora.
Whether you often have passengers or you usually travel solo, you can count on Mazda’s i-Activsense® safety technology to give you peace of mind. This safety technology assists in protecting you, passengers, and pedestrians in case an accident happens. You’ll have access to features such as Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Day and Night-time Pedestrian Detection and available Traffic Jam Assist.
The new MAZDA CX-5 configurations are powered by the standard SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with Cylinder Deactivation or the available SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 with Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine. The standard powerhouse delivers up to 187 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque while the available turbo powerhouse maxes out at 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque instead. You can also get better handling on the roads of Centennial without upgrading since the brand’s exclusive all-wheel drive, the i-Activ AWD®, comes standard.
One of the top competitors of the MAZDA CX-5 is the Kia Sportage. While the Sportage is respectable, its interior is not extravagant like the MAZDA CX-5’s. It has standard woven cloth seat trim and a smaller touchscreen display at only eight inches. If you’d like a leather interior, you’ll need to upgrade to have features, like a leather-wrapped gear shift knob and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Similarly, you’ll need to pay more for the available Harman Kardon® premium surround sound though it only has eight speakers.
In terms of safety technology, the 2024 Kia Sportage comes with its brand-exclusive suite of advanced driving assistance features, which is known as the Kia Drive Wise. Kia Drive Wise includes a mix of standard and available features, though the standard ones only include common technologies, such as the lane keeping assist and lane departure warning.
While the 2024 Kia Sportage is available in almost as many trims as the 2024 MAZDA CX-5, there is only one engine option and that is the 2.5L inline four-cylinder engine. This 2.5L engine offers up to 187 hp, which is the same horsepower as what MAZDA CX-5’s standard engine offers. However, its torque, which is up to 178 lb-ft of torque, doesn’t compete with MAZDA CX-5’s standard torque. Plus, the Sportage has standard front-wheel drive, so you’ll need to pay more to enjoy the available all-wheel drive if you want better traction on the road.
While the Kia Sportage has many appealing features, it’s obvious that it’s no competition for the MAZDA CX-5 when it comes to delivering more power and a more luxurious driving experience.
