The All-New 2019 Mazda3 Shows Why a Small Car Is Still a Great Choice

March 7th, 2019 by

If you’re among the millions of people who don’t want an SUV or pickup, the all-new 2019 Mazda3 is a shining example of how awesome a small car can be, or as’s Jason Westbrook puts it, “small cars are better than ever…the new Mazda3 keeps up with how good things are getting these days.”

Both the 2019 Mazda3 four-door sedan and five-door hatchback are flat-out gorgeous –  sleek and aerodynamic, so they’re more efficient and quieter. Either model is available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

It’s what’s under the hood that amazes: five engine choices including the revolutionary 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-X M Hybrid powertrain that U.S. News says, “combines the characteristics of gasoline and diesel engines, plus a mild hybrid system, to maximize power and fuel economy.” It will be available later this year. Meanwhile, there are 1.5-, 2.0- and 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engines and Mazda’s first-ever SKYACTIV-D diesel. All have a six-speed automatic transmission, although a manual is available on the top trim level hatchback.

Safety & Technology

Standard and available safety technology is huge in the 2019 Mazda3. The long list includes: rearview camera, Smart City Brake Support, Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Front and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane-Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Drowsy drivers will benefit from the available Driver Monitoring system that spots droopy, wandering and blinking eyes, and facial configuration and sounds an alert. Cruising and Traffic Support works in traffic jams to keep you at a safe distance and speed.

Premium Interior

Mazda’s worked hard to give the Mazda3 interior a cleaner, but more premium feel with a standard 8.8-inch Active Driving Display angled toward the driver. Mazda’s next-generation Mazda Connect infotainment system has easier-to-read fonts, a built-in owner’s manual and the ability to collect all your favorite stations, locations, etc. in a single menu. An eight-speaker sound system is also standard.

And as you climb the trim ladder, each level adds more perks, although they differ slightly from sedan to hatchback:

  • Base level (sedan) – 16-inch wheels, cloth seats
  • Select (sedan/hatchback) – 18-inch wheels, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, leatherette seats, keyless entry, push-button start, i-Activsense safety features including rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control
  • Preferred – 12-speaker Bose sound, heated front seats and power driver’s seat
  • Premium – Leather seats, LED head and taillights, sunroof, head-up display

According to Jalopnik’s Westbrook, “it’s no question that the material quality of the car has vastly improved over the outgoing generation.”

Is it fun to drive? The 2019 Mazda3 is engineered for more corner stability, tighter steering and has softer tires to mitigate rough roads, making it ideal for Colorado drivers who spend time in the city but also on winding mountain roads.

The 2019 Mazda3 is a great example of a small car whose time has come –  sleek, well built, full of the latest technology, comfortable, fuel-efficient and, best of all, reasonably priced.
