A Mystery for Mazda Lovers: What’s the 2024 CX-90 Going to Be?

We love a mystery! This one will be solved in January, when Mazda reveals an

SUV Colorado drivers will love: the CX-90 plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Mazda is tantalizing us with clues about the CX-90. 

1. It’s Mazda’s first PHEV – although an inline six-cylinder gasoline-only engine also will be available. 
2. It will be the brand’s flagship vehicle, it’s largest yet, featuring three rows of seating. 
3. Mazda says the CX-90 will be “performance oriented.”

Mazda’s being pretty tight-lipped about the CX-90 until the official introduction, but educated guessers are saying that the PHEV “e-Skyactiv” powertrain could include a 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor that together could offer 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The electric-only range likely will be 35 miles. We don’t know yet whether it will be just rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. 

The official news release  crows that “The CX-90 PHEV will maintain the responsiveness, performance and driving dynamics that define Mazda vehicles. “This all-new e-Skyactiv powertrain, tuned specifically for the North American market, will provide customers with the best of both worlds in terms of performance and efficiency.” 

Mazda has made a commitment, dubbed its “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 vision” to have a fully electrified model lineup by the end of this decade. The CX-90 is an important step in that transition. Mazda also has been aspiring to compete with some of the marquee luxury brands, and newer Mazda models feature more refined interiors and sharp styling.
