Bad Tires Break the Law

If you need to drive in winter conditions your tires should comply with Colorado’s Traction Law, which Gov. Polis signed into law last year. It updated the previous rules and complements the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law.

Violations of either law could mean a fine of between $132, and if you block the roadway while either law is in effect, more than $650. Why? According to Colorado Dept. of Transportation data, last winter on the most problematical highway, I-70, every crash closed at least a lane and nearly one in six caused a total shutdown.

What’s the Traction Law?

CDOT decides when to implement the Traction Law during winter storms or whenever conditions demand it. After it goes into effect, vehicles out on the road must comply. You can check road conditions, and whether the Traction Law is in effect where you’re traveling, online. Information is also available on the electronic overhead road signs.

Here’s the number to remember: 3/16”. That’s the minimum tire tread depth that CDOT requires when it invokes the Traction Law (with one exception). Motorists must have:

• A four-wheel or all-wheel drive plus tire tread depth of at least 3/16.”
• Mud or snow-designated tires (look for the M+S icon) with at least 3/16” tread depth.
• Winter tires (look for the icon) plus 3/16” tread depth.
• All-weather tires (designated by their maker) that have at least 3/16” tread depth.
• The Exception: Your vehicle is using chains or an AutoSock®.

The new Traction Law is always in effect between September 1 and May 31 on the stretch of Interstate 70 between Dotsero and Morrison, whether it’s snowing or not.

What’s the Chain Law?

The Chain Law goes into effect during very bad winter storms. It’s the last thing before CDOT just closes the highway. When that happens, even that magical 3/16” of tread depth will not be enough. Motorists will have to have either chains or an AutoSock for their tires.
